The Lustre software layouts represent how file data is distributed over OSTs. Originally, only simple RAID0 (striping) layouts were supported, and enhancements were required to implement features such as [[Data on MDT]], [[File Level Redundancy]], live Data Migration, and RAID-1/5/6 or erasure coding. The Layout Enhancement (LE) project is a prerequisite for the Data on MDS and Replication projects proposed here. Design and Architecture documents relating to file layouts (striping) were written to ensure a consistent approach was taken by all of these projects.
